Founded in 2018, Shanghai Oriental Institute of Medical Innovation (SOIMI) is a non-profit service organization approved by Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau and under the charge of Shanghai Science and Technology Committee (STCSM). Adhering to the service concept of "Respecting Knowledge, Guarding Creativity, Professional Services, and Creating Value", the institute is committed to promoting the clinical scientific research, and commercialization of scientific and research findings.

SOIMI is the first specialized institute in China that integrates services of creative ideas collection, prototype development, patent protection, proof of concept (PoC), technology transfer, product registration, and technology promotion. It has more than 30 senior professionals in the industry, including clinical engineers, patent lawyers, technical managers, regulatory registrars, quality system specialists, etc.

SOIMI has good resources in clinical, technical and industrial. At present, it has gathered more than 100 in-depth partners, including well-known universities, high-level hospitals, cutting-edge scientific research institutes and innovative enterprises, and built an international technology transfer cooperation network covering USA, UK, Japan, France, South Korea, Canada, Sweden and other countries.

SOIMI focuses on providing full link comprehensive services in the medical field of "Creative Patenting, Patent Productization, and Product Industrialization", closely focusing on clinical needs and demands. Its business covers clinical innovation evaluation, patent layout protection, product designing and development, prototype production, product registration application, business model designing, academic resource connection, joint research of industry, university, and research, technology transferring and project incubation, industrial capital connection and other medical innovation and entrepreneurship areas.

At present, the Institute has served more than 50 medical device innovation projects originating from clinics. The project covers medical devices of Class II active, passive, Class III passive and implants, and in vitro tumor diagnostic products, involving multiple departments such as urology, general surgery, digestion, anesthesia, radiology, intracardiac, interventional, etc.
